The motif of the ‘tree-woman’ recurs frequently in Rita Kernn-Larsen’s work. In 1929, the Danish artist was introduced to Surrealism in Paris: an art movement that blends reality with dreams, fantasy and the subconscious. Back in Denmark, Kernn-Larsen continued – through the artists’ group Linien (The Line) – to exhibit alongside international Surrealists such as Max Ernst and Salvador Dalí. This painting was displayed at her first solo exhibition in London, organised by art collector Peggy Guggenheim.
