In this work, Buhlebezwe Siwani pays a loving tribute to the pregnant Black woman, depicted as a calm, self evident presence. Her gaze is both gentle and confrontational, her posture vulnerable but steadfast. From a distance, this looks like a sculpture made of green bronze, but it is made of readily available green soap. This symbolic choice of material refers to an imposed idea of purity. In South Africa, Siwani grew with this soap that was used for cleaning clothes, but also for the body. [text 2025]
