Messouma Manlanbien grew up among weavers and learnt the craft at an early age. For her rugs, she developed her own visual language. In it, she connects all kinds of elements from Western and North American popular culture, the matriarchal Akan culture of Côte d’Ivoire and the Creole culture of Guadeloupe. These collages bring together drawings of foetuses, womb-like spaces, pebbles, flowers, cowrie shells and Akan heads. [text 2025]
