Eva Spierenburg’s untitled attempt (to carry) is about doubts surrounding possible motherhood. The contours of the work follow her breathing in and out, as if she imagines she is carrying a life inside her. The body is reduced to belly, hips and genitals, reminiscent of ancient fertility images. Inside her however, is not a baby, but an adult face. Spierenburg sees the work as a symbolic conversation between herself as a possible parent and her future child. Spierenburg’s work often deals wwith the body and shows how personal experiences broach broader, universal themes. [text 2025]
