Art does not pay

‘Man does not live on bread alone. Song and dance have helped people through difficult times,’ Arman Baag argued. With this painting, he expresses the view that painterly art might not earn you money but it does provide a creative world full of dreams, nature and spirituality. In Suriname, Baag took drawing lessons from Nola Hatterman, whose work is also on display here. From 1961 onwards, he lived and worked in Tilburg and later in Amsterdam. [text 2025]
