Abstract Penny Quilt
Abstract Penny Quilt and Abstract Color Chart belong to a series of wall-mounted ceramic pieces made of fired red clay covered in colourful gloss glazing. The patterns are derived from the Pennsylvania German Style, which 18th-century emigrants to America took with them from German-speaking Europe. They hark back to their quilts, ceramics and board games. Apfelbaum links the traditional 'cottage industry' she grew up with to 'elevated' modern art movements like those of De Stijl and other geometric abstract genres. [text 2023]
