Eline Brouwers creates objects intended to mislead. This goal is clearly reflected in the materials she chooses, as with Het Stoel (v).Dutch is a gendered language, and ‘stoel’ – chair – is a male word. With the female-coded Het Stoel (v), Brouwers plays with male and female stereotypes in terms of both form and language. Though the chair seems soft at first glance, with upholstery and threadwork, it is in fact entirely made from hard ash wood and copper wire. Het Stoel (v) is Brouwers’s response to male furniture pieces. [text 2023]
