An ‘Utrechter’ or an ‘Utrechtenaar’ is a resident of Utrecht. However, the latter term has had a negative connotation since 1730. That year, police raids took place in the Dom Church, a meeting place for homosexuals. Sodomy was still illegal at the time and eighteen suspects were sentenced to death. The term spread to the rest of the Netherlands: Utrechtenaar became a derogatory term for anyone who behaved in a Utrechtian manner. This T-shirt aims to reclaim the word. [text 2025]
