In 1914, Hendrik Berlage designed the fully furnished hunting lodge Sint-Hubertus for art collector Hélène Kröller-Müller. A few years later, she asked the architect for a breakfast service. Berlage started work on a design based on the hexagon. Knowing little about mass production, he passed on the commission to his employee Piet Zwart who added the circle and the cylinder to Berlage’s design. With this tableware, Zwart celebrated the possibilities of industrial production – and thus of modernity. [text 2024]
