The Swiss Photorealist Franz Gertsch mainly portrayed friends from the art world in domestic situations, such
as his compatriot Harald Szeemann here. Szeemann was the curator of the influential art exhibition Documenta 5 in 1972 in Kassel, where Photorealism was given a global stage and Gertsch made his international breakthrough. This early work is less finely painted than that of his American colleagues, despite the use of a photographic source: Szeemann is almost blinded by the camera flash. [text 2024]
