Leunstoel Wouter Paap

The second half of the 1920s saw a boom in chairs made from tubular steel. All the modern architects were designing their own tubular steel furniture. Rietveld also started to experiment with this material in 1926. In 1930, the company Metz & Co exhibited three chromed models in the exposition of the ‘Union des artiste modernes’ in Paris. The chairs did not receive enough interest to go into production. This prototype was given by Rietveld to Utrecht musician Wouter Paap as a wedding gift.

Gerrit Rietveld

De Utrechtse Gerrit Rietveld (1888 - 1964) is meubelmaker en architect. Zijn vader leidt hem op als meubelmaker. Rietveld ontwikkelt zich tot een vooruitstrevend ontwerper. Soberheid en ruimte staan centraal in zijn werk. Zijn ontwerpen, zoals de beroemde lattenstoel, worden opgepikt door De Stijl. Binnen deze stroming ontmoet hij gelijkgestemde kunstenaars. De opdracht van Truus Schröder om samen haar woonhuis te ontwerpen maakt van Rietveld een architect. Hij bouwt honderden gebouwen in Nederland, zoals het Van Gogh museum en de Rietveld academie in Amsterdam. Meubelen bleef hij de rest van zijn leven maken. Het Centraal Museum heeft de meest omvangrijke Rietveld collectie ter wereld.
