Although it was still quite controversial, some women were wearing two-piece swimsuits on the beach as early as the 1940s. In 1967, Marielle Bolier came up with an alternative: the ‘minikini’. ‘I’m not going to the beach in a bikini with such baggy bottoms and underwires in the top.’ As well as swimwear, Bolier also designed this outfit to wear by the sea: a light T-shirt and a skirt with a high side slit.
