Reizigers bij de Ponte Molle over de Tiber

The Ponte Molle, also called Ponte Milvio, is the famous bridge that connects the two sides of the Tiber in the North of Rome. On this spot the most famous battle in Roman history was fought in 312: between the emperors Constantine I and Maxentius. Famous is the citation of Constantine that he owed his victory to the god of the Christians. The painting comes from a house at the Utrecht Lijnmarkt. The unusual oblong format has to do with the original function. It served as an overdoor.
