Fiesta gitana
In 1965, Constant made a design for a permanent gypsy camp with movable walls to partition its space. This soon led to the construction of New Babylon, a model for the new world of the future Homo Ludens (playful man). Constant himself regarded Fiesta gitana, gypsy festival, as an illustration of New Babylon. The painting is, however, far from festive. The landscape resembles a battlefield. It was Constant’s belief that war would be the downfall of Homo Faber, the working man, making way for a new, playful culture.
