The PUG Collection
The collection of the Provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences (PUG) is an impressive assemblage of prehistoric objects, Roman artefacts and medieval items.
The Provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences began collecting ‘antiquities’ in 1841: glasses and cups, gold and silver coins and jewellery, beautifully decorated pottery, oil lamps, writing implements and belt buckles. The impressive collection of some 15,000 archaeological finds comprises prehistoric objects, a wealth of Roman material and medieval artefacts. Some of the objects come from excavations in and around Utrecht, including sites around Domplein square, Fort Vechten and De Meern.
The Centraal Museum and the PUG collection have been closely connected since 1921. The collection was initially displayed in the museum’s basement and later in the adjacent Fundatie van Renswoude. Today, the collection is owned by the municipality, and since 2010, most of the objects have been kept in storage.
