Modemuze
The online platform Modemuze provides a comprehensive overview of Dutch fashion and costume history. Centraal Museum is one of its 13 partners.
An overview and in-depth exploration of fashion and costume history
Modemuze offers a source of knowledge and inspiration for a broad audience. Tens of thousands of collection items are brought to light, while a range of topics are highlighted through visual reports and short articles. The platform provides in-depth content for professionals and an accessible overview for anyone with a general interest.
Visitors to the platform can add their own stories and images, ask questions and share information. In this way, existing knowledge about our textile heritage is exchanged and expanded.
Collaboration
The joint online platform Modemuze is a natural extension of the collaboration between the museums. A network of active curators shares knowledge about fashion and coordinates the collections’ acquisition and presentation policies. In 2013, the collaboration resulted in the Amsterdam Museum and the Centraal Museum jointly acquiring designs by Fong Leng. The museums also organize joint public events.
Modemuze and Centraal Museum
The Centraal Museum showcases fashion and costumes, accessories, images of fashion exhibitions, posters and fashion catalogues on Modemuze. With a collection of more than 10,000 objects, the Centraal Museum makes an important contribution.
The Centraal Museum began compiling an overview of costumes from the period 1750–1900 a century ago. Its current collecting and presentation policy focuses on significant, boundary-pushing designs from contemporary fashion. Alongside Dutch designers such as Viktor & Rolf, Klavers van Engelen, Iris van Herpen, Alexander van Slobbe and Winde Rienstra, the collection also features international designers such as Maison Martin Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, Comme des Garçons and Junya Watanabe.
The Centraal Museum’s complete collection is available online. By now also making its fashion and costume collection available on Modemuze, the collection is placed in a broader context. Modemuze provides an extensive and highly comprehensive overview of Dutch fashion and costume history.
The Centraal Museum is one of 13 institutions collaborating on the Modemuze online platform. Since late 2014, seven fashion and costume collections have been permanently available online: those of the Centraal Museum, the Amsterdam Museum, the Fries Museum Leeuwarden, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Museum Rotterdam, Paleis Het Loo and the Rijksmuseum. The collections of six other institutions have since been added: Tassenmuseum Hendrikje, Textielmuseum, Theatercollectie Bijzondere Collecties UvA (Stichting TIN), Tropenmuseum/Afrikamuseum/Museum Volkenkunde, Nederlandse Kostuumvereniging and Zuiderzeemuseum.
