About the film
In MUSCLE (2025), Karimah Ashadu takes you into the world of bodybuilders training in a makeshift gym in the slums of Lagos. Through intimate close-ups of muscles, skin and movement, the film explores how the Black male body is viewed and portrayed, without resorting to stereotypes.
To the rhythm of breathing, exertion and street sounds, MUSCLE shows that bodybuilding is not only about physical strength, but also a way to shape your own identity. Like graffiti writers, these men consciously construct their own image in order to be seen and to decide for themselves how they are perceived. The film brings attention to the stories, ambitions and determination of people who are often overlooked.
