Outside the city gates, in addition to inns and taverns, there were also hospitals where travellers, the homeless and the sick could stay. People with no permanent residence had a bad reputation and were therefore kept outside the city walls. The Holy Cross Hospital outside the Wittevrouwenpoort was founded in 1408 and housed hundreds of people over the centuries.
