The 16th-century Tower of Saint Servatius marked the entrance to the Nieuwegracht for centuries. But in 1830 it was demolished along with Utrecht’s city walls to provide the city with more light and air. Parts of the ramparts were transformed into a landscaped park with hills and trees to promote healthier life in the city.
