Bart Rutten has been the artistic director of the Centraal Museum since May 2017. He was previously the head of collections at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Recent projects included the exhibitions The Oasis of Matisse (2015) and the Russian Avant-Garde (2013). He also contributed to the redesign of the contemporary art collection in 2012. Bart worked closed with artists including Rineke Dijkstra, Stanley Brouwn, Joan Jonas and John Knight.

In addition to artistic director of the Centraal Museum, he is:

  • Member of the board of Stichting NDSM-werf
  • Member of the board of Estate Stansfield /Hooykaas (until 2017)
  • Member of the Supervisory Board of Kunstvlaai foundation (until 2017)
  • 2017 ABN AMRO Art Award jury member
