The Centraal Museum has a liberal loan policy. Each year, the museum loans approximately 250 pieces from the collection to about 70 exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad. To ensure the loan process goes smoothly, we have established the rules below.

Message from June 2022: behind the scenes, the Centraal Museum is working on two large projects concerning the collection: a new presentation of the permanent collection and the preparations for the move of 70.000 objects to a new storage facility in 2026. We therefore have to temper our loan activities. We can only provide the most essential loans, and will not be able to make any exceptions from our six month request period. Once all the work has been done, we will be happy to resume our generous loan policy.

  • A loan application must be submitted at least six months prior to the starting date of the loan.
  • Your application must include the following information:
    • name and address of the institute requesting the loan
    • contact person (name, job title, telephone number, post address, email address)
    • current facility report for the institute
    • reason for request (exhibition, research, etc.) and a brief description of the project
    • exhibition period(s), name and place
    • list of objects with inventory numbers
  • Applications will only be processed after the submission of a written request addressed to the director: Centraal Museum, attn Bart Rutten PO Box 2106 3500 GC Utrecht or by email to loans@centraalmuseum.

Costs arising from the loan (for example, condition reports, packing) will be passed on. After a loan application has been processed and the borrower decides to withdraw (in part) the loan request, the costs incurred will be passed on.
