Following the death of his beloved Eurydice, Orpheus retreated to the wilderness to sing his sorrow. Animals gathered around to hear the beautiful notes of his lyre. For D 'Hondecoeter, who, like Roelant Saverij, is best known for his untouched, wild landscapes, the mythological story formed an ideal setting for what was in fact his main subject: the landscape.
