Sojourner Truth (c. 1797-1883) was an enslaved woman in New York state who, until the age of nine, was owned by a Dutch speaking slave owner. Her story shows the importance of black female resistance and agency. Truth became an outspoken abolitionist who was active in the struggle for women’s rights. She can be considered to be the intellectual predecessor of current black feminist anti-racist fighters, like Professors Gloria Wekker and Philomena Essed.
