After the Second World War, Rietveld mainly designed furniture commissioned for larger projects: chairs and tables for public spaces, not for private use. Metal was a material he frequently used, due to its strength and suitability for mass-production. In America, the Eames couple and designer Herman Bertoia had already achieved great results for this design. Rietveld’s wire chair did not develop any further than this prototype. Eight years later, he and his son Wim designed the Mondial, which did go into production.
