During the Franco-Dutch War, French troops surrounded Utrecht. In this painting, the mayor and aldermen are handing the keys to the city to the supreme commander on his white horse: 'Sun King' Louis XIV. Lambert de Hondt provides a solid example of French war propaganda in this painting. On the left, drunk soldiers harass the only woman present. The message? Surrender to us like Utrecht has, otherwise your women will suffer. [text 2023]
