Jennifer Tee based this tulip leaf collage on woven tampan palepai from South Sumatra, Indonesia. These ceremonial ship cloths played a role in important life rituals, such as marriage and funerals. The tulip, a Dutch icon, also relates to Tee's family history and multi-ethnicity. Her Dutch maternal grandfather was a tulip grower; her Java-born Chinese father emigrated to the Netherlands by boat. The ship and souls are in limbo – a state of uncertainty between different worlds. [text 2023]
