This exceptional dressing gown, or ‘Japonsche rock’, has a surprising ‘Western’ cut with separate set-in sleeves, as opposed to the more traditional kimono model such as the Japonsche rock on display in this room. The multi-coloured design of asymmetrical, large flowers and plants reveal that the material is costly chintz. While the textile was painted by hand, the positioning of the fastening and the pockets were taken into account. Careful consideration reveals that it is not perfectly matched and the pocket flaps are not in exactly the right place. When the dressing gown is unfastened a second layer is revealed in the form of a stitched in waistcoat. The lining is of red striped linen.
