The white plastic chair seems out of place on a veranda where everything else is made of wood, except for the door handle and slippers. The contrast with the solid wooden chair is striking: one is a mass-produced item from the factory, the other is handmade and hence unique. Still, the two chairs are also archetypes representing two entirely different cultures. Since the early 1990s, artist Roy Villevoye has been a regular visitor to Papua New Guinea, a former Dutch colony. Here he became acquainted with the Asmat, a local ethnic group. But the wooden cabin shown here cannot belong to the Asmat, as they build their homes elevated high above the ground. This must therefore be the dwelling of a missionary who most likely brought the white chair from his (western) home country. [text 2023]
