Remarks
René Descartes (La Haye, Frankrijk 1596-Stockholm 1650), Frans Filosoof en wiskundige, grondlegger van het rationalisme. Hij ontvluchtte Frankrijk en vestigde zich in Nederland. Hij woonde enkele jaren in Utrecht, waar hij in conflict kwam met Voetius. Voetius verwierp de rationalistische denkbeelden van Descartes en wist bij de vroedschap gedaan te krijgen dat Descartes in 1643 de stad moest verlaten. De tekst in het boek dat Descartes in de hand houdt luidt: ''Mundus est fabula'' (De wereld is een verzinsel). Zijn beroemste werk is Discours de la méthode [...], Leiden 1637.
